Saqib Munir Khan As a Muslims we believe that the seat of the ‘Soul’ resides in the heart (qalb in Arabic). Soul was created before the concept of time ( Alame-Irwah) beyond Time Zero when there was no mass or matter in existence but the infinite space in gaseous form that exploded and universe was created as planned and scientifically programmed by Allah (God). It is our view of the vast and ever expanding universe that temporal world was created after Time Zero but metaphysical world –soul (ruhs) was created trillions of years before the Big Bang. Soul (Ruh) has no body but is fully conscious of the temporal world that we live in. It is beyond human comprehension and intelligence to discover its origin because it transcends human imagination and five senses.
Human reason is incapable of knowing the noumenal world, as it cannot transcend the boundaries of space and time. Space and time are not objective realities and as they are only modes of apprehending phenomenal realities, they are essentially subjective and have no existence apart from the subject. Human reason has the ability to know only the temporal world and metaphysical is an attempt to know the ultimate realities with limitation. But, there is another level,” intuition,” that is unique in its experience and essentially different from other mode of cognition. It is not perception or thought and transcends to the heights of unknown. It negates logical, physical and scientific descriptions or explanations but resides deep down in your inner most self. Heart is a machine but the qalb (ruh) controls our conscience and state of mind. . .
So what is this Qalb ? Islam (both the Qur-aan and Sunnah) use the term “Qalb” to refer to the human mind, psyche or mental processes that comprise thinking, reasoning, consciousness, intention, decision-making mindset and outlook, and which define a human being as a person and determine his personality. The rapid changes being referred to in the Ahaadeeth above are changes in thoughts, outlook and mindset that occur rapidly under exposure to the strong winds blowing in the society or the intense heat generated by the pressures of the society. The fact that Qalb refers to mind and mental processes is clearly implied by the following verse:
They have (Quloob) minds with which they do not understand, and they have eyes with which they do not see, and they have ears with which they do not hear. They are like livestock; in fact, they are worse because they are so heedless! (Al-A‘raaf 7:179)
“Do they not reflect upon the Qur-aan; are there locks on their Quloob (are their minds blocked)? (Muĥammad 47:24).
